Carpal tunnel Syndrome

What is it?

It is a common condition that results in a painful and numb hand, usually  at night. It is due to the compression of one of the nerves supplying the hand as it passes through the wrist.

It causes tingling  In your thumb, index and middle finger. These symptoms are often relieved by shaking of the hand.

carpal tunnel
Nerve entrapment in the wrist

What causes it?

Compression of the nerve is usually caused by an accumulation  of fluid in the wrist. The cause of this is often never found. It can occur in pregnancy and is associated with diabetes and thyroid problems.

What is the treatment ?

Initial treatment is always conservative.Splints are often helpful with the night symptoms .In the early stages a simple steroid injection can be curative in 80% of cases.

If these measures fail or the symptoms become permanent then surgery is recommended. This is a simple procedure performed under a local anaesthetic, as a day case.
